Ratatat - Shempi
4 StarsIf Daft Punk and Justice had a baby, Ratatat would be it.
Razzle Dazzle, New York’s finest electro duo Ratatat are back with their latest offering of electronic psychedelia, ‘Shempi’.
Taken from their third studio album ‘LP’, Mike and Evan silence the critics by experimenting with many different genres platforming them to much more than the usual synth and beat breaks synonymous with the electro genre. Pushing the boundaries, their genius turns creative on ‘LP’ with the use of synthesizer patches, sound effects and percussion. The band’s use of video-game sonics is enough to give Crystal Castles a run for their money, as the beats keep you hooked without a single word. If Daft Punk and Justice had a baby, Ratatat would be it.
Full of swirling noises, ‘Shempi’ immediately draws you into it’s version of reality, undecided as to what that is no-one seems to care as this high energy, synth littered track provides all the elements of an electronic merry go round. ‘Shempi’ has the sound of a Nintendo video game circa 1990, think Super Mario on a quest for the distressed princess and you’ve got it. Not content at producing the bounciest smile inducing, feet shuffling track Ratatat with the use of some crafty video editing skills re-work an ABBA video turning ‘Shempi’ into nothing short of a wacky pop culture art piece. Honestly the video is worth the look alone. Electro-suave.
Ratatat have the ability of switching and mixing it up to achieve an all round teaser of what’s to come. Feet firmly underneath that disco ball kids as Ratatat aren’t going anywhere.
