The Maccabees - No Kind Words

A change in musical direction has definitely occurred.

‘Colour It In’

was certainly an upbeat collection of songs and whilst ‘No Kind Words’ is the only song available from the forthcoming second album ‘Wall Of Arms’, a change in musical direction has definitely occurred. ‘No Kind Words’ displays a funereal, atmospheric yet simplistic approach. And no, this is not White Lies. There is a real sense of depth with this, and its grand scope doesn’t appear to lack substance. The insistent, subtly building guitars are a constant discrete feature, and their simplicity creates a beautiful although somewhat sinister feel. Singer Orlando Weeks, who was acclaimed by many for his heartfelt and individual vocals, is conveys a sombre and ominous monotone, which reflects the mood of the track perfectly. “If you’ve got no kind words to say, you should say nothing more at all” he implores, and who can argue against him with such a brilliant song? Its calm cool gives a chillingly Nick Cave-like dark side to this. ‘No Kind Words’ shows a different side to The Maccabees, an intriguing one for sure. So far, it doesn’t seem like the band’s second album will be a disappointment.
