Surprise! Bastille are DIY’s June cover stars
We’ve been keeping schtum on this month’s cover stars, but today, the band exclusively talk to DIY about their new album.

Beyoncé, Drake, Radiohead - they’re all fans of keeping their new releases under wraps until the very last minute. So, we figured why not follow the trend and do the same?! This month, us lot at DIY decided to keep our very own secret: this month’s cover stars.
As it just so happens, they’re rather mysterious themselves - but now it’s all out in the open: Bastille are gearing up to release their new album ‘Wild World’, and we have the very first word on it.
In our world exclusive interview with the South London quartet, they talk life after their multi-platinum selling album ‘Bad Blood’, learning how to write on the road and returning to the place where it all began.
Fancy a snippet? Here’s what the band’s Dan Smith told DIY about their gorgeous album trailer, which was released yesterday (and you can watch below).
“We’ve sort of been toying with this imagery of falling backwards and that idea that you’re in a mid-state of either jumping or being pushed, and landing or whatever happens at the bottom. That feeling’s a bit of a rush, and it’s kind of scary, but when you’re resigned to it… It’s about reacting to the situation that you’re in. Last summer, during festival season, we had this sculpture hanging behind us of a falling man and this video is very much about that. There are people looking up and there’s this person falling, but they’re not scared, they’re not sad.
“It’s about that sense of a lack of control and maybe resigning yourself to it, but also being in the moment and maybe enjoying that. It’s about all of those complications that are provoked in you. We’ve all had a falling dream, we’ve all woken up with a start and you’re not dead at the end of it. For ages, I just had this idea and we wanted to start with something really evocative and provokes a lot of questions.”
That’s not all - elsewhere in the mag, we travel up to Manchester to chatter to the brilliant Spring King, learn about Tegan & Sara’s pop evolution and talk stolen laptops and Mr. Blobby with Big Deal.
Elsewhere, we pin down Mac DeMarco ahead of his slot at this summer’s Glastonbury Festival, go inside Glass Animals’ studio and meet South London pancake expert Loyle Carner. We also take a look at all of the most exciting releases from the past month, as well as venturing into the intriguing world of the surprise release.
Finally, as a bit of an added bonus, we’ve got some treats in store. First up, we have ten signed Instax shots from our shoot with Bastille to give away - check out a few of those below - which we’ll be slotting in with random orders and subscriptions, so keep your eyes peeled and fingers crossed!
Plus, for all of you that sign up for an annual subscription to DIY, we’ll be throwing in a free and rather nifty A3 poster of the band, for good measure. Everyone’s a winner!
The June 2016 issue of DIY is out from midday on Friday 3rd June, available free via stockists across the UK, readable online, downloadable via our iOS app but if you’d rather have a copy posted to you in person or want to subscribe - and be in with a chance of getting one of the above signed photos - order below.
