Kaytranada wins Polaris Music Prize with ’99.9%’

Montreal producer Kaytranada has won this year’s Polaris Music Prize, the Canadian award for the year’s best album.

His ’99.9%’ LP was one of a ten-album shortlist that also featured Grimes’ ‘Art Angels’, Jessy Lanza’s ‘Oh No’ and White Lung’s ‘Paradise’. Previous winners include Fucked Up, Caribou, Arcade Fire and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Accepting his award (and a $50,000 CAD cheque, zing) Kaytranada said: “For me, it’s crazy to get this award. It’s really, truly, a big honor. It’s amazing. Shout-outs to all of y’all. I want to thank the judges and everybody for voting for me.”

Last night’s ceremony at Toronto’s The Carlu featured performances from Black Mountain, Carly Rae Jepsen and Basia Bulat. Each nominee was also given a seal of approval from a famous fan. Turns out Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard is a big fan of Pup.

Each of the other nine shortlisted albums received a prize of $3,000 CAD.
