M.I.A. takes aim in her video for ‘P.O.W.A’

Colour, dancing, references to Madonna, Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande and Rihanna, plus more than a bit of political commentary. It can only be an M.I.A. video.

‘P.O.W.A’ is her first single since last year’s album ‘AIM’ and revolves around a sample of The Marcels’ 1961 track ‘Blue Moon’. In it she chants “supa-kala fascist, racist, espi-ala-tazors/ Posers with the cases/ They better not erase us.” Hmm. Wonder who that could possibly be talking about…

Its new video, which has been directed by M.I.A. herself, sees Maya wandering around different desolate landscapes in colourful saris and dresses after hitching a ride on the back of a marigold truck. She also comes across a whole line of men against a giant orange wall, forming a barrier with their superbly fluid dance moves.
