Mastodon, Corporation, Sheffield

We’re aware that we’re adding to a ridiculously high mountain of hype, but it’s all so very true.

Pop music that’s not only absurd, but that’s aware of the inherent absurdities of creating pop music.

More bad than good; we’re having trouble figuring out what the point of its release is.

The score itself isn’t a radical departure for British Sea Power, even going as far as to contain some reworkings of older tracks, but is nearly entirely instrumental, meaning that it seems unlikely to please some of the more casual fans of the band. As an accompaniment to the film however ‘Man of Aran’ is a pretty stunning piece of work.

We’d like to say that this forms another arm of some sort of Scandinavian pop renaissance, but we fear this is reading too much into things.

The debut album from Official Secrets Act is a sci-fi epic of the type that only Brits can do. It’s a Tears For Fears referencing album that’s not afraid of using repetition and hypnotic mesmerising pieces of music. It’s even kind of prog. It’s also one of the debut albums of the year and chock full of great pop tunes.
