DIIV bassist Devin Ruben Perez makes abusive, misogynistic comments, frontman responds

DIIV frontman Zachary Cole Smith (pictured, far right) has publicly spoken out against comments made online by the band’s bassist, Devin Ruben Perez (far left).

In an investigation by website Sexism in Music, Perez was found to be making frequent offensive comments on the public forum 4chan. Under the username ‘Devin-Chan’, he referred to Perfect Pussy singer Meredith Graves in misogynistic terms, calling her “a bitch because she sucks,” while giving her a numerical rating, “Not my type AT ALL. Sorry. 1/10.”

He was also found using a racist pejorative to describe producer Zomby (saying “That nigger is the biggest troll ever.”) while calling actor Jake Gyllenhaal the “biggest fucking faggot ever.”

In follow-up comments responding to the original investigation, Perez went further. When attempting to defend his previous statements, he said (again referring to Meredith Graves): “She IS a bitch though. She’s really fucking mean. I never did anything to her and she’s always looking for ways to attack me and my friends, like a rabid FEMALE DOG.”

Sexism In Music finishes its original post by stating “I will no longer support this band, and I suggest you do the same.”

In the immediate aftermath, DIIV frontman Zachary Cole Smith has called out his bandmate, saying “I’m doing everything to get to the bottom of this.”

“I’m so fucking disgusted. so fucking angry,” he tweeted last night (13th December). In replying to fans, he also stated “clearly a lot of people think it’s ok to call a woman b****h just so long as it’s on 4chan”.

DIIV are currently at work on the follow-up to their self-titled debut. It’s tentatively due out in 2015, and they’ve been confirmed to appear at next year’s Field Day, 6th June.
