Mercury Prize 2015
Ghostpoet on his second Mercury Prize nomination: “I was half asleep, I thought it was a dream”
The singer-songwriter received his second Mercury nod for ‘Shedding Skin’ - he tells DIY about his plans to use the prize money for “special dog treats”.

As the Mercury Prize creeps ever-closer (here’s those nominations, fyi), we figured it was time for a quick catch up with a few of the nominees, in order to capture their crazed, excited, possibly drunken haze of emotions in the wake of the announcement last week.
Ghostpoet’s no stranger to the Mercury. His debut album ‘Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam’ was nominated back in 2011, and he’s since sat on the panel of judges, too. He was conspicuously missing from the panel this time around, so the nomination for ‘Shedding Skin’ was surely a dead cert. It’s not just the politics of picking the panel (try saying that after a gin) that hinted at his inclusion though - back in February we pinned ‘Shedding Skin’ as “Ghostpoet’s masterpiece” in our 4-star review, before quizzing him on the “more observational” aspects of the record.
Our quick, post-Mercury-nom catch-up with Obaro is below, and if you fancy delving into Wolf Alice’s plans for the ceremony too, you can check that here.
How does it feel to be nominated for the Mercury Prize again?
It feels bloody great, mate. Was totally unexpected and to be nominated again? Truly a blessing…
Where were you when you found out?
I found out the week of the announcement I think, I know I was half asleep at the time so I kind of thought it was a dream for a little bit.
Any big plans for the ceremony? Any Kanye-style mic-grabs? Maybe don’t wear a cape…
LOL not that I can think of at the moment but DEFINITELY no capes.
Who (apart from yourself, no cheating) do you think deserves the award and why?
I not sure anyone, including myself ‘deserves’ the award more then the next artist but I would love either Benjamin Clementine, Gaz Coombes or Eska to win.
If you DID win, what would you do with the twenty grand?
Pay some bills. Give some to charity. Treat my pup to some special dog treats.
