Lady Bird deal with difficult family relationships on ‘Boot Fillers’

The NEU favourites tackle broken homes and step-parents on their latest offering.

On debut EP ‘Social Potions’, Kent trio Lady Bird set themselves up as punks with a heart, offering up mosh-worthy bangers but with an atypically sensitive lyrical core.

Now they’re back with new track ‘Boot Fillers’ and it’s an even more unlikely gem.

Full of rowdy sing-along “la la las”, it’s a rough’n’ready number on the surface. Beneath that, however, it finds singer Sam Cox discussing the difficulties of accepting a string of new temporary stepfathers into the family, ultimately ending in a positive spoken-word mantra: “We don’t have to stay the same forever/ We can blossom and adjust and some day become better/ He can be happy, you can be happy, we can all be happy/ But it requires practice.”

The track was co-produced by Jolyon Thomas (Royal Blood, The Magic Gang) alongside Girl Fight records’ label bosses - Isaac and Laurie from Slaves.

The two bands will also be teaming up this November when Lady Bird support Slaves on their forthcoming massive tour.
