Liverpool’s Gulf distort psych with ‘Out Here’ single
Invention-rinsed track lands ahead of a Latitude Festival appearance.
Last month, surrounded by big names Swans and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, it was actually a local favourite that turned out to be Liverpool Sound City’s best discovery. Playing a hundred yards from their practice space - on the main stage - Gulf mastered the art of taming a big space with sweet, psych-doused pop.
For the past year, they’ve been placed alongside fellow Northern gems Outfit and Dutch Uncles as the next gen of unorthodox pop. New single ‘Out Here’, however, goes a few steps further. Premiering on DIY, it’s a glistening dose of arms-aloft, sunshine-baked escapism. Clipped, funk guitar lines aren’t a million miles away from the anthemia of Foals, and everything’s delivered with a murky aftertaste, like taking a summer road trip while high on too many allergy meds.
