Liverpool’s Gulf find new boundaries on their ‘Tell Me Again’ single
Oddball, genre-fusing pop is the latest sign of progress from this new band.
Something’s in the water up North. A host of bands are spinning their charms, each progressing on different paths towards the same end goal of producing oddball pop that dazzles the ‘serious thinker’ while never over-indulging.
Outfit lead the way in those stakes, but Manchester’s Dutch Uncles look ever closer to perfecting their curious routine. The same goes for Gulf - far fresher faces, this Liverpool bunch are similarly promising when it comes to flexing shimmering synth lines and subtle funk licks.
If there’s anything uniting these bands, it’s their ability to flick a switch and make something potentially self-indulgent come off positively universal. Gulf are already specialists of this trade.
DIY’s premiering new single ‘Tell Me Again’ below. Gulf play London’s The Old Blue Last with JLYY and FURS on 20th November 2014.
