From the same headline people who brought you yesterday’s ‘Alabama Shakes and My Morning Jacket team up to cover Backstreet Boys’, comes today’s instance of bonkers - a Reddit user found an unreleased Sufjan Stevens album called ‘Stalker’ in a bin.
Look, we don’t write this stuff, okay? Well, we do. But not like that.
As the tale goes, this anonymous bin-diver of Reddit used to work next door to Suffy’s Brooklyn studio. Posting a picture of a 14-track CD called ‘Stalker’ (fitting, given the whole bin sniffing business) to Reddit, he claimed he didn’t know whether it had been released or not.
Sufjan’s label, Asthmatic Kitty, were rather nice about the whole thing, simply asking for the music not to be posted. “If it was in the trash,” they stated, “there was a reason (most likely the expectation that it’d sit in a huge landfill outside of NYC). AKR won’t send any ‘severe takedowns’ or legal notices. We don’t do that. Instead, I’m asking you, as someone who’s also had the special privilege of hearing unreleased music, to politely ask that you keep it to yourself.”
Of course, this being the internet, and the internet being chock full of bastards, the guy went and uploaded the whole thing to professional bastard-dome 4Chan. In the interests of not making Suffy cry, we won’t share it, but the rather awful sounding tracklisting is below, along with a pair of pictures of the release. Maybe it’s a good thing it was canned.
1. ‘I Know Where Your Kids Go To School’
2. ‘U Kan Wrun But U Kan’t Hyde’
3. ‘I Got A Good View From Where I’m Standing’
