Sundara Karma fan the 'Flame' with new single

Sundara Karma have released the latest song from their upcoming debut album ‘Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect’ (out on January 6th via Chess Club / RCA). Though ‘Flame’ has been knocking around a fair while on Spotify, it’s now getting a ‘proper’ single release, which is nice. Naturally, the live favourite is inspired by old philosophical story Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. Erm…

To summarise quickly, Plato’s cave is a pretty fucking bleak place. Basically, a prisoner sits inside the dark and gloomy hole surrounded by shadows, prangs out, and thinks that’s reality. He only realises he’s wrong later on, when he gets a peep at the sunny world outside. For Sundara Karma, it’s all a comment on consumerism.

“We’re told that happiness will come from buying more shit or that you’re inadequate, from adverts, that you need to buy the new best thing in order to feel better,” says the band’s Oscar Pollock. “It’s really fucked up and there’s definitely some shady shit behind power. For me it’s so obvious what’s wrong with the world at the moment and what the solutions would be – improving education for example, and taxing companies that have committed crimes. I don’t understand why those things aren’t happening. There must be some dodgy shit going on if these obvious things aren’t being addressed.”

There you go then. Listen below.
