The Walkmen’s Peter Matthew Bauer covers St Vincent’s ‘Prince Johnny’
The bassist of the on-hiatus group put a Dylan-esque spin on the track.
The Walkmen’s Peter Matthew Bauer has put his own spin on ‘Prince Johnny’ for Amazon Acoustics’s covers series. The St Vincent song - a standout from her self-titled fourth record last year - turns away from its beginnings into a stripped back, Dylan-flavoured version. It’s also something of a departure from The Walkmen’s post-punk.
Speaking about his cover choice, Bauer said “I chose her song ‘Prince Johnny’ because it was one of my favorite songs in the last few years. Because it’s so not acoustic, I thought it’d be fun to arrange it in a completely different way. I heard the song on the radio when it first came out; it was a single off her record. It was the first St. Vincent song that I really got attached to. It’s a big hit around the house. I’ve got a little five-year-old girl who’s very heavily into St. Vincent.”
