Warpaint, on their new album: “It’s a lot more rough and in your face”
Band talk third LP ‘Heads Up’ in the new issue of DIY, out Friday 5th August.
Yesterday (1st August) saw Warpaint announcing third album ‘Heads Up’, leading the way with the fully-charged, oddball pop single ‘New Song’.
In the new issue of DIY (out Friday 5th August), the band open up about their “more rough and in your face” third LP, out 23rd September.
Emily Kokal says “we almost tricked ourselves into making an album really, really fast.” She adds: “We just kept making these songs, adding parts to them, and doing what we do. And pretty soon all these little ideas were an album. This process was really conducive to what music is all about; capturing a moment, and capturing creative energy.”
‘Heads Up’ saw Warpaint working with Jacob Bercovici, who manned the desk for debut EP ‘Exquisite Corpse’ back in 2009. A back to basics approach was definitely intentional. “That was kind of the plan. We wanted to make [the album] ourselves, in our rehearsal space, in downtown LA. We decided we should probably have some help but we wanted it to feel really homegrown and organic, so [Bercovici] was a really obvious choice.”
The August 2016 issue of DIY is out from midday on Friday 5th August, available free via stockists across the UK, readable online, downloadable via our iOS app and if you’d rather have a copy posted to you in person, below.
