Album Review
Buck Meek - The Mirror
4-5 StarsA wonderfully rich collection, this is a record that’s easy to love.
Big Thief guitarist Buck Meek has quietly built up a wonderful discography of psych-country-rock solo records. On this fourth album ‘The Mirror’, Buck fosters a sense of collaboration, inviting those close to him to contribute to these warm, soulful 11 tracks. Unsurprisingly, then, bandmate Adrianne Lenker’s distinct voice appears on several tracks, as well as Buck’s brother Dylan, and acclaimed harpist Mary Lattimore. It adds up to a gorgeous album that overflows with easy-going energy. Most notable are the opening and closing tracks. Opener ‘Gasoline’ hints heavily at Neutral Milk Hotel; a resplendent folk rock beauty of grand-yet-intimate scale. Closer ‘Outta Body’ is the most vibrant number: riding soft but propulsive rhythmic layers, it drops in subtle electronic embellishments that pop with kaleidoscopic colour. A wonderfully rich collection, ‘The Mirror’ is a record that’s easy to love.
