Azealia Banks - Grand Slam (Prod. Machinedrum)
Her next move is anyone’s guess but you can expect it to cement the chances of her becoming something of a superstar.
These 90 seconds of snarling, intelligent word manipulation might at first appear insignificant, but in the grand scheme of things, ‘Grand Slam’ is yet another pointer in the direction of Azealia Banks’ ridiculously bright future.
Preceding a mixtape which itself comes before a debut full-length, this Machinedrum produced snippet gives indication of Banks’ immense ability, as she announces herself with full aplomb, above a minimal, sharp backdrop. Far from being as provocative as the statement-making ‘212’, it still stands on a similar level when it comes to addictiveness. Like her earliest efforts, you’re again left with so many questions as to her identity, her intentions - each little, swear-addled lyric can be picked apart and intensely examined.
The song is stripped of ‘212’’s grimy immediacy; more a simple showcase of Banks’ lyrical promise than a hard-hitting, in-your-face introduction. The words fly out seamlessly and effortlessly, with enough curses slotted in to give someone responsible for making radio edits a very nasty migraine. Banks is an extraordinary talent, already cited by many as a step-up from Nicki Minaj, and you can see why. Her next move is anyone’s guess but, like this latest track, you can expect it to cement the chances of her becoming something of a superstar.
