DIIV - Sometime

‘Sometime’ clearly excels when being allowed the room to expand and flourish.

A little over a year ago, back when they were still known as Dive, ‘Sometime’ - albeit as a rougher demo version - was Zachary Cole Smith’s first outing under his new solo moniker. Fast-forward to late 2012 and the new look DIIV have already secured their place among many people’s favourite albums of the year.

Given it’s a re-recorded version, there is always a danger that something so raw can lose its initially unhampered arrangement, as is so often the case when a track has receives the ‘professional‘ treatment. ‘Sometime’, however, clearly excels when being allowed the room to expand and flourish. The multi-layered, almost hypnotic guitars and swirling vocals work in tandem to give the track added depth, building on the shimmering atmosphere that is at the core of so many of the songs on the bands sublime debut LP.

We now know that DIIV are a pretty special band, and perhaps ‘Sometime’ perfectly exemplifies just how special that is.
