For those unfamiliar with Fred Macpherson’s past (which includes musical project Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, amongst others), Spector may have seemingly popped out of nowhere with their bombastic debut single ‘Never Fade Away’; there’s no doubt, however, that this London-based five piece know what they’re doing. Their new release, ‘What You Wanted’ embodies the good ol’ indie spirit of the past few years, with a massive chorus and a tried-and-tested guitar chord progression.
Comparisons can be made to The Vaccines, owing to the immediacy present; the production so clear that you could reasonably expect ‘What You Wanted’ to be overplayed on the radio sometime soon. Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to jump to the conclusion that this band are cynically trying to manufacture future ‘indie’ hits.
Whilst it’s somewhat off-putting to suspect the band of ulterior motives, it’s inevitable that the repetitive lyric “Right now / What you wanted / It’s not what I wanted” will seep into your brain, catching you unaware when you should probably be doing something more important. Whether you like it or not, Spector are here to stay.
