Taylor Hawkins fronts Foo Fighters for Letterman rendition of ‘Stiff Competition’
Dave Grohl was behind the drums for the band’s Cheap Trick cover.
Foo Fighters are currently four nights into a week-long residency on US TV show The Late Show with David Letterman. So far this week, viewers have been treated to covers of Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’, Heart’s ‘Kick It Out’ and Tony Joe White’s ‘Polk Salad Annie’. For their next performance, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’d be the band’s new single - as revealed last night - ‘Something From Nothing’, but oh no, you’d be wrong.
Instead, the band invited along the track’s primary guest, Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen, to perform a cover of his band’s own hit ‘Stiff Competition’. And just to mix things up a little more, Foos’ drummer Taylor Hawkins took on vocal duties - complete with a rather beautiful white three-piece suit, too - while usual-frontman Dave Grohl sat himself at the drum kit.
The band’s week’s worth of performances comes ahead of the release of their brand new album, ‘Sonic Highways’. Scheduled for a 10th November release, the likes of Eagles’ Joe Walsh and Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard - as well as Nielsen - are confirmed to appear.
’Sonic Highways’ arrives in the form of an LP and a new documentary, which sees the band landing in different US cities to record, while Grohl interviews musical legends from different sides of the country. Each episode is devoted to a different musical landmark in the U.S. - Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C. It’s set to air on BBC Four from Sunday 26th October.
