Oh My Gish
The Smashing Pumpkins release new song ‘One and All’
Ahead of forthcoming album ‘Monuments To An Elegy’, Billy Corgan has made his return with ‘One and All’, and he certainly means business.
Call them The Smashing Pumpkins, call them Billy Corgan’s mislabelled solo project; in fact, call them whatever you like. Either way, The Smashing Pumpkins have released a new song, ‘One and All’, coming ahead of the band’s forthcoming record ‘Monuments to an Elegy’, due on December 9th.
Billy Corgan has always been incredibly clear and blunt about his dislike for nostalgia around records that The Smashing Pumpkins made in the past. Admittedly, though, there is a strong whiff of ‘Siamese Dream’ style fuzzgression on ‘One and All’, and a sprinkle of ‘Mellon Collie..’ melodrama in those overwrought choruses, too.
All this sonic harking back could easily get a bit musty, but ‘One and All’ has an attack that still sounds current and hungry. Potentially the best thing The Pumpkins have put out in quite some time, ‘Monuments To An Elegy’ is shaping up into a very interesting prospect indeed.
