Cover lovers:
Car Seat Headrest have shared an acoustic cover of The Smiths
Will Toledo and co. have taken on 1985’s ‘That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore.’
Car Seat Headrest took on Frank Ocean’s ‘Ivy’ last year and
now they’ve unveiled another unique cover version.
Will Toledo and co. have reimagined The Smiths’ 1985 song ‘That
Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore’ from the Mancunians’ second album ‘Meat Is Murder.’ They’ve
stripped their own usually scuzzy sound back to acoustic guitar and the
reverberating, pained voice of Will himself. The raw, no-frills version brings
to the fore the track’s themes of depression and empathy, especially when Will
sings lines like “Time’s tide will smother you and I will too/ When you laugh
at people who feel so very lonely.” Truly haunting.
The cover version comes after the band announced another
round of US tour dates, which comes in advance of a bunch of UK and European
festival appearances. If Will decides to break this one out, better make sure
you’ve got a spare tissue.
