CocoRosie and ANOHNI team up for protest song ‘Smoke ‘Em Out’

It welcomes Donald Trump “with a mob of women and children armed with forks and knives.”

Art-pop outfit CocoRosie are currently working on their new album, but with the inauguration of a certain Donald Trump happening on Friday, there was one song they just couldn’t wait to release.

‘Smoke ‘Em Out’ sees CocoRosie rapping about the continuing global feminist struggles by using a wealth of Biblical terms, over an up-tempo beat and sparkling string flourishes. ANOHNI sings the hook, talking about burning everything to the ground. It’s all very buoyant though, making sure you get the message through its gripping hooks.

The duo told Pitchfork: “Today we share a new song to inspire the weary-disappointed hearts of so many crest-fallen citizens. We just started working on a new album, but “Smoke ‘em Out” begged to be turned loose on the world now, as a means of participation during these turbulent yet invigorating times. Joined on guest vocals by our fellow Future Feminist ANOHNI, ‘Smoke ‘Em Out’ welcomes the new character who will be occupying the White House with a mob of women and children armed with forks and knives.”

They continued: “In the wake of this unnatural disaster, we feel a call to rise, shout, and burn the house down. “The future is female” and a very necessary force to be reckoned with.”
