Deerhoof preview new album with ‘Last Fad’ track
Fizzing take from ‘La Isla Bonita’ is streaming on DIY.
‘Last Fad’ is the breakneck, fizzing, brilliantly malleable focal point of Deerhoof’s no-fucks-given new album ‘La Isla Bonita’.
Originally, this was a record that wasn’t even meant to exist. Nearly two weeks were set aside for the group to practice, rehearse and realign. They messed around, messed around some more, and then out stepped this album when they finally decided to hit record. ‘Last Fad’ captures this process best - shape-shifting from a fidgety beast into an all-out monster with the flick of a switch.
Explaining how the record came together, Deerhoof told DIY:
“We recorded this record by accident. Those 10 days in Ed’s Portland basement were meant to be for writing and recording demos. It wasn’t till the last day we put it together that the rehearsals should be the album. That’s the way we always did it when the band started out as a lo-fi noise side project so we were super game to go again. And anyway ‘Let it Be’ was always my favorite.”
The track is streaming below, exclusively on DIY. It arrives alongside an official audio stream that also shadows as a subtle / hilarious product placement of Deerhoof’s own invention. “The clip shows us trying to learn this ridiculous riff Satomi wrote on her phone. It also features an ad for a new product we’re trying to market in the U.K.,” they matter-of-factly explain.
Catch-up with Deerhoof’s ‘Paradise Girls’ and ‘Exit Only’ - ‘La Isla Bonita’ is out 3rd November on Upset the Rhythm (UK) and 4th November on Polyvinyl (North America).

The title of this record is much like the music it bears - you squint at it for a minute, trying to work out what it means, and then suddenly it all makes sense.
