Mumford & Sons air new song ‘The Wolf’
Ahead of forthcoming album ‘Wilder Mind,’ the track got its first play from Huw Stephens, sitting in for Annie Mac.
Tonight Mumford & Sons revealed the second preview ahead of their forthcoming album ‘Wilder Minds’. ‘The Wolf’ got its first spin on Radio 1 from Huw Stephens, who was sitting in for Annie Mac.
If any doubt remains that Mumford & Sons are shooting for the sonic stratosphere, ‘The Wolf’ should well and truly lay that to rest. Lyrically it’s still coloured by fables and folklore - “you better keep that wolf back from the door, he wanders ever closer every night” - but it surges forth with a new urgent potency, too. It’s Mumford’s most ambitious, stadium-ready song yet.
Talking to Huw, Mumford & Son’s Ben Lovett expanded on the new song. “I think we’re trying to stay true to ourselves, and we’ve moved on a little bit…its like when you look at pictures of yourself from seven years ago - you’re like, it’s still me, but it’s a different me.”
Frontman Marcus Mumford previously spoke in a similar vein about the band’s recent musical explorations, namely their move away from those banished banjos. “[Wilder Minds is] a development, not a departure,” he said. “I think all of us had this desire to shake it up.”
‘Wilder Mind’ was recorded in London and produced by James Ford (who has previously worked with Arctic Monkeys, HAIM, and Florence & The Machine). A number of the new songs were written and demoed at Aaron Dessner from The National’s garage studios in Brooklyn. It’s out on 5th May.
