Little Boots - Shake

A glorious miscellany of the synth-pop sphere’s contrasting corners.

As the artful lead single from an album described by the lady herself as ‘magical, but quite dark and spooky,’ ‘Shake’, via its syrupy club tangs, subterranean bass synths and really quite silly vocoders, forcefully confirms this over its consummate 6 minutes.

On the way imbuing the leaden abrasion of T33TH’s DREAMTRAK remixes and the more affable catchiness of Class Actress’ latest, Little Boots’ new single plays out like a glorious miscellany of the synth-pop sphere’s contrasting corners.

Produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford, the track is inevitably a lot more club-ready and ‘Stuck On Repeat’-lite in length, but all the better for it. ‘Everybody shake, until your heart breaks’ she coos; our brains sing it back for hours afterwards.

It’s the catchiest, but not quite the best, ‘shake’ song of all time – the former is that marvellously rambunctious Rapture song which goes ‘shake, shake, shake, shake, shake.’

Lyrically, yes, it’s pretty insipid, but that’s not the point of this kind of music, is it? Fun, groovy and melodious – 2009’s greatest hope has got a new face.
