The Twilight Sad - I Became A Prostitute
4-5 StarsFeedback and distortion immediately rain down on the listener.
, the new single from ‘Forget The Night Ahead’, the sophomore record from The Twilight Sad, wastes little time cranking the volume to 11, as feedback and distortion immediately rain down on the listener before they’ve even had a chance to settle in. It’s all intentionally disorienting, and certainly captures your attention straight away, but the noise eventually recedes giving way to the steady bass lines of Craig Orzel and the disconcerting lyrics of James Graham, providing the song with a short lived moment of calm. But after darkening the stage for this tragic tale of an archetypal fall from grace, the massive chorus kicks in to rattle the windows once again. The track is an explosive burst of guitars and drums balanced with an infectious melody that lies just beneath the surface of the song, keeping the sound of the storm from breaking entirely.
The Twilight Sad have proven to be masters of joining the discordant aggression of their music with catchy, pop leaning song structures hidden within the din, blending the two into a cacophonous cocktail that often leaves heads spinning, and ‘I Became A Prostitute’ is no exception. The track is a whirlwind of noise and emotion, with an indelibly powerful chorus that is as strong as anything released this year. Ears certainly will be ringing as the dissonance slowly fades away, but the vivid images and emotions evoked by this striking song will linger, as will the walls of guitar that are as loud as anything you’re bound to hear this side of a My Bloody Valentine concert.
