New music guide The Neu Bulletin (2nd July 2014)
DIY’s batch of new music tips includes Mapei, Eerie Glue and Azekel.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG:
Mapei - London, Cargo
This is a London debut to get very excited about. Odds are on Mapei becoming a chart stormer with new single ‘Change’ - as if previous track ‘Don’t Wait’ didn’t confirm this already. The Swedish-born, US-based musician has a debut album round the corner - watch her showcase it right next door to the DIY office. Fancy that.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Azekel - Holy Matrinomy
Londoner Azekel’s last track ‘New Romance’ is slick and streamlined to the extreme. Flipside ‘Holy Matrimony’ makes for an unusual but thrilling marriage, where oddities seize the day. Blinking piano notes and a loose delivery make it a strange but soulful number, self-produced and all the better for it.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Eerie Glue - I’m So Needy
Bünyamin Eroğlu’s Eerie Glue have over 30 tracks to rinse through, but this might be their finest. ‘I’m So Needy’ is a rough-edged kick in the shins, a reminder that unfinished business and untied knots often make for bigger thrills than something clean cut. It’s a song that sings about faking your own death, but it’s also the sound of an act that’s never seemed more alive.
