Sufjan Stevens releases previously unheard ‘Wallowa Lake Monster’

It’s an offcut from sessions for his 2015 album ‘Carrie and Lowell’.

Two and a half years on from releasing ‘Carrie and Lowell’ Sufjan Stevens has treated us all to an off-cut that didn’t quite make it onto the final record.

A seven minute shimmerer, ‘Wallowa Lake Monster’ recounts the strange, murky mythology of a lonely Leviathan (or Biblical sea monster) who lives at the bottom of a ribbon-like lake in Oregon. Initially chiming and spritely, it eventually gives way to intense choral bursts, and booming horns.

‘Wallowa Lake Monster’ is taken from a newly announced Sufjan released called ‘The Greatest Gift’. A mixtape of ‘Carrie and Lowell’ off-cuts, demoes, and other unheard gems, it comes out on November 24th via Asthmatic Kitty.
