Sufjan Stevens unveils new song, ‘No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross’

New song leads Sufjan’s forthcoming LP ‘Carrie & Lowell’.

Sufjan Stevens has unveiled the first track to be taken from his new album, ‘Carrie & Lowell’.

‘No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross’ gained its first play on BBC 6 Music earlier today - it’s now streaming below, backed by slow-motion footage of a beautiful sea shore, filmed by Don Whitaker.

The track itself backs up Sufjan’s promise of a stripped-down, back-to-basics LP. “There’s blood on that blade / fuck me, I’m falling apart,” he sings, on what could easily rank as one of the songwriter’s most personal tracks to date.

Spanning just over two and a half minutes, listen to the new Sufjan Stevens song below. Read the lyrics in the Youtube description.

‘Carrie & Lowell’ is released on 30th March via Asthmatic Kitty Records.
