, a Staffordshire based, all male quintet, seem to be gaining marks on the ‘elements needed for success’ tick sheet; indeed, with a string of successful gigs and a Kerrang Radio session under their belts, not to mention a Russell Brand lookalike providing lead vocals, this indie offering reads rather well. Thing is, we’ve got two problems with this one: seagulls and diction.
Whilst the intro leaves a lot to be desired (if we wanted to hear the sound of crashing waves, we’d move to Brighton), ‘Holiday’’s use of catchy guitar riffs and up-tempo melody redeem it somewhat. But only somewhat; lead vocals sound as though mumbled through a mouthful of cornflakes, with the only extractable word being, funnily enough, ‘holiday’. It gets repetitive. Fret not, however, as it isn’t all negative! Answers On Postcards have a very distinctive, decidedly British sound, something which is becoming a little rare in this very American age. Kudos.
Maybe we’ve just got the Autumn blues but we aren’t feeling this song, sorry. However, if you do fancy purchasing the single, the B-Side, ‘Do You Miss Me?’, is a little more impressive, if, again, a tad repetitive (‘Do you miss me / Do you miss me / Do you miss me…?’ Please, dear God, answer him). We’ll say this for them, though: they all have very nice hair.
