In the magazine June 2021

Featuring Wolf Alice, Japanese Breakfast, Lucy Dacus, Warpaint & loads more.

Let’s be honest: ever since that glorious night back in 2018 when Wolf Alice picked up the Hyundai Mercury Prize for ‘Visions Of A Life’ (and DIY had one too many celebratory vinos in the process), we - like much of the rest of the country - have been patiently waiting to discover what magic they had in store for us next.

And while, admittedly, DIY has been very much Team Wolf Alice for the better part of ten years now, even we couldn’t have imagined how incredible ‘Blue Weekend’ could be. That’s why we’re thrilled - nay, honoured! - to welcome the quartet back to the cover once again this month as they release their awe-inspiring third record into the world, and take another step towards becoming the biggest band in the world.

“It’s always about striving to create a world and a stimulating feeling; the sound of your favourite band playing in the distance at a festival, trying to make songs that capture that excitement,” the band’s Theo Ellis tells us, of the record’s more cinematic quality. “There’s all these kind of nuanced, weird, stupid ways of saying it, but I think ‘cinematic’ does fit into how we want to make things.”

Elsewhere in our June 2021 issue, we usher in Japanese Breakfast’s new era as she releases third album ‘Jubilee’, we dive into the past and explore some of Lucy Dacus’ early memories as she gears up to release ‘Home Video’, and we reconvene with Warpaint to talk their forthcoming new album, and how they’ve been piecing it together from across the world.

There are also chats with the incredible John Grant, producer extraordinaire Rostam, and Fleet’s new (potentially only?) darlings Drug Store Romeos. We also get the lowdown on Sigrid’s comeback single ‘Mirror’, speak to the icon that is Garbage’s Shirley Manson and reminisce with none other than Sugababes, ahead of the 20th Anniversary re-release of their debut ‘One Touch’.

Plus, we look back at Queens of the Stone Age’s dark and gnarly record ‘…Like Clockwork’ in Hall of Fame, while this month’s Neu section features profiles on incredible new acts Wallice, cleopatrick, deep tan and Smoothboi Ezra.
