Charli XCX Talks Second Album, Supporting Paramore in September

The singer gave us the inside scoop on where she’s at with her second record.

Charli XCX’s debut ‘True Romance’ only came out back in April, but it looks like the follow-up is already well underway. Talking to DIY before her performance on Reading’s Dance Stage on Sunday, Charli XCX gave us the scoop:

“I just shot the video for the first single,’ she told us. ‘That’s going to be available in the beginning of October, and the video should be out in the next couple of weeks.’ Charli also hinted at an interesting new direction; the 21 year old singer-songwriter has been listening to a lot of new-wave and French pop music lately, which has inspired her writing. ‘I’ve been back in Sweden, and I’m hopefully going to Paris to record the second record. It’s going to be very influenced by French Yé-yé pop, and bands like Bow Wow Wow, The Waitresses, really live and raw.”

After we’d finished marveling at her incredible platform shoes, we also asked Charli about her forthcoming support slot on the Paramore UK tour in September. ‘I’m just starting the mission of making my live show super amazing,’ she said, ‘and when I go on tour with Paramore, it’ll be something completely different.’

Although she’s gutted that she had to jig around her US tour dates to accommodate it, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the singer to kick off extensive UK touring in style. ‘I’m excited to reach new people, that’s why you do these kinds of support shows,’ she said. Charli XCX added that she is especially excited about getting to play alongside a certain Paramore frontwoman. “Hayley’s such a great performer, I feel like we represent a lot of the same things, she’s an amazing, intense, exhilarating performer. She’s not girly, she’s kickass. I love that.’
